Diabetes.

As you may know, millions and millions of Americans have a disease called diabetes. A girl in my class, Miranda, has diabetes and inspired me to write about this. Diabetes is a disease in which the body doesn't produce or use insulin correctly. Insulin converts sugar, starches, and more into energy that the human body can use. It has not been proven, but obesity and genetics seem to cause diabetes. There are four major types of the disease - Type 1, Type 2, Gestational, and Pre-diabetes. Type 1 is caused by the the body's failure to produce insulin. Type 2 is a condition in which the body cannot use insulin properly. Gestational diabetes happens directly after pregnancy. And finally, Pre-diabetes happens when someone's blood glucose levels are above average, but not as high enough to be considered as Type 2. I think more people should be educated on diabetes. In fact, nearly 1 in 4 people with diabetes are completely unaware of it! So remember to eat healthy, exercise frequently, and stay fit.
Some diabetes myths (untrue) that you should be aware of:
- Diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar.
- Diabetes is contagious.
- People with diabetes cannot eat sweets/sugar.
